Civilians who drive Crown Victorias and other retired police vehicles, put radar units in them, amber/green/white lighting, partitions, window bars, laptops and a million antennas that don’t lead to anything. Even sirens.....
And I’m not talking about volunteer EMS/Fire, or off duty LEOs. I’m talking about just other people that don’t work with emergency services that do this for no reason other than to impersonate police officers.
Why do people do this?

I thought that was illegal?

Because no one on the road will fuck with you if they think you’re LEO.

Things that annoy me?
When people go from a 2016 Jetta to a 2014 Tacoma.

As long as it doesn’t say “POLICE” on the side, or have red and blue lights, you’d be amazed how close “impersonating” can get, provided they don’t try to pull people over.

I drive an old police crown vic (white, still has the spotlight but none of the other paraphernalia) and people thinking I’m a cop is probably the worse part about it.
STOP SLOWING DOWN IN FRONT OF ME
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:09 |

Haha, who did that?
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:09 |

One came up behind me the other day. When I realized it wasn’t actually a cop I floored it to spite him.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:09 |

I imagine the same kind of people also attempt citizen arrests.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:09 |

Having a kinda-policey looking car isn’t enough. You have to actually do police stuff with it before it crosses the line from car cosplay into illegal activity (like pulling people over, questioning people and asking for ID, putting lights on and operating like an emergency vehicle would by running lights, driving at excessive speed, putting an official looking police livery on the car, etc.)
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:10 |

Pretty much what Dogapult said.
I believe in Texas they were trying to pass some legislation to prevent people from making fake police cars after a few incidents involving police impersonators. But I’m not sure if that’s gone anywhere recently.

One of the many reasons why traffic stops with unmarked cars should be illegal.

I think CVPI’s should have been scrapped.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:15 |

Huh, back in high school people used to jump out of the way in front of my friends Grand Marquis. It was always fun to cruise down the highway and watch the lane empty in front of you.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:17 |
|
What? And give up all that sweet sweet money they can make by selling off their old gear?
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:17 |
|
It’s a tossup on the highway, sometimes the roadway empties before you (especially in the left lane) but sometimes you get caught in a bunch of people who won’t do the speed limit. Don’t even get my started on the people who refuse to pass (just sit right in the blind spot) and cause perpetual congestion behind me...
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:18 |
|
Literally that. I got into a shouting match on Youtube with a guy who bought a CVPI, $10,000 worth of equipment and wasn’t even a cop. I basically told him he wasn’t a cop in case he didn’t already know.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:19 |

i think you should be scrapped
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:19 |

This is one reason they shouldn’t use unmarked cars for patrol/traffic purposes
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:20 |

Why would you buy equipment you can’t use that’s also worth more than the car?
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:20 |

In college I had a Caprice and my sister had a Crown Vic. We once ended up on the same random, empty stretch of interstate unexpectedly and both were slowing down in fear of the other “unmarked cop car” until the license plates were visible.

Panther platform cars in general annoy me because they’re possibly the most overrated thing in existence.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:21 |

This also annoys me. Usually assholes trying to impersonate cops.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:24 |

I personally think the car above looks cool.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:27 |

Clearly not the most overrated. I mean, the Miata exists.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:27 |

They are certainly not. Much better than any other police vehicle made since the ‘96 and eariler Caprice.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:28 |

That.
His argument was that people make fake Ghostbusters cars and fake Knight Rider cars and fake Back To The Future Deloreans. But that’s very different than a fake police car.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:29 |

I have to say that the Miata is definitely more overrated then the Panthers.
The Panther platform has haters and can be hated
If you hate on a floppy Miata you get banned and flamed

Eeeeeeexactly!
People who do shit like that are just wannabes. He claims he used to be a cop, I wouldn’t be so sure about that though.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:37 |

If (big if) he used to be a cop, and this is the kind of shit he’s pulling, there’s probably a good reason he’s an ex-cop.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:38 |

As a Miata owner: Miata owners are just salty because these cars are floppy pieces of shit.

Been there done that.
Dude in a black civilian Explorer with interior lighting and “K-9" lettering on the back window. He was also wearing Oakley wraparounds.
Passed him on the right because he wouldn’t move over. Really taught him.

Unmarked cars are a valuable tool, it’s usually in the uniform that you can tell if somebody isn’t a cop.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:41 |
|
Depends on the department. Some don’t use unmarked cars for responding to calls as they’re usually assigned to higher ranking officers.
I think they should be used for patrol and traffic purposes though. It’s usually in the uniform and appearance of the officer that people look at.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:42 |

I agree with literally everything.
If he was a cop, I’ll bet he was a power hungry asshole who tripped off his own authority and got fired.

A guyI knew in high school bought a retired state police cvpi when turned 15 and go his license. One afternoon after school he decided to park it along a busy street and hold up a hair dryer like it was a handheld lidar device and watch people slam on thier brakes.. He got instant karma when a real cop drove by. They gave him a break in that they released him to his parents with a summons to appear on an juvenile impersonation charge. In a bit of foreshadowing, he actually did become a cop about 10 years later.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:44 |

If he’s not a cop, hopefully the psych eval and reference checks weeded him out. To say nothing of any academic legwork required to apply. Granted, I don’t know what US police forces have as their standards.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 21:49 |

Usually you have to have college credits or military experience depending on the department. No dishonorable discharge from the military, certain mental disorders disqualify you, good health and that kind of thing. Most polygraph as well.
A lot of departments are requiring/highly suggesting higher education. Which I’m guessing this guy probably doesn’t have.

Because, sometimes people can’t accept who they are as human beings and instead of doing something about it they just fake it. Also, because trying to improve themselves or accomplish their dreams might lead to failure and if they never actually fail they never have to admit to themselves they are a failure.
Even though the most of society knows they are a failure they can convince themselves everyone else are haters, not that it’s them that suck and should probably evaluate themselves and try to do better.

Because I’ve been here long enough that fuck it, I’ll be an agent of chaos against the Oppo hivemind.

Have you been stopped in the 525i yet, by the way?
Or is it too broken to exceed the speed limit?
![]() 01/23/2018 at 22:02 |

Police are there to serve and protect, unmarked cars are strictly for observing and collecting.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 22:12 |

its stuck in third gear.

They’re good for working DUIs, surveilance in some cases and getting dangerous drivers off the road.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 23:01 |

And police officers have a duty to intervene if a crime is witnessed, whether they’re driving an umarked car back to the station after dropping off paperwork at the courthouse or not.

*Mr. Regular voice* “IT’S CAUSE YOU WANT TO LOOK LIKE A COP!”
![]() 01/23/2018 at 23:04 |

The college credit thing is mostly theoretical. At least in the larger departments (who are the only ones that will hire anybody without prior police experience, since the smaller ones won’t pay for academy training), pretty much everybody that applies these days has a college degree, military experience, or both; so they just don’t take the ones that don’t have either.
![]() 01/23/2018 at 23:21 |

So then why are you so upset that a civilian car looks like a cop car if you support cop cars looking like civilian cars?
![]() 01/23/2018 at 23:44 |

I laughed so hard at this. Thanks.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 00:00 |

Also, cops/fireman that don’t think they’re civilians.

The bar for becoming a cop in like 95% of US cities is extremely low.

Having POV lights in your personal car is fine.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 00:26 |

Because I support law enforcement and don’t care if they have unmarked cars if it makes their jobs easier.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 00:27 |
|
I’ve seen some exceptions to that, but not always it seems.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 07:28 |

That’s what these people are doing. If you think their job is to calm traffic, these guys do a great job of it. If you think their job is revenue collection, these guys would still help because people would focus on the cars that look like a cop car, and ignore the Explorer that still does but has no law enforcement markings. Then they’ll pull over for someone who they think is a cop in an unmarked car, and get robbed, raped, murdered, and dumped in the ditch.

![]() 01/24/2018 at 10:04 |

Why? It’s a Crown Vic with some beefed up components.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 10:12 |

Because they mainly attract cop cosplayers.

Low bars for policing is pretty universal.
![]() 01/24/2018 at 13:52 |

That doesn’t happen as often as you’d think.
These people who decorate their retired police cars to fulfill some weird fantasy of being a police officer are a different breed of weird.

Find me another V8 RWD sedan that will go 200k miles on basic routine maintenance and I’ll consider it.

What about obviously decommissioned patrol cars?
I’ve always wanted to buy one of these ex Raleigh Police Crown Vics and Mad Max it. Kinda like the Bluesmobile.
Mud tires, small lift, hood scoop, but keep the peeling graphics that some of these have and never wash it.
![]() 01/28/2018 at 00:00 |

I think one of those would look awesome. Laura Jane Grace from the band Against Me drives a retired black and white CVPI and it’s clearly not in service.
